A five-month-old male foetus was found abandoned at Pali Hill at Khar on Friday.

According to officers from the Khar police station, the foetus was found near a garbage bin opposite Sea View Building on Nargis Dutt Road. Pali Hill is home to  several rich and famous personalities, including Bollywood stars. The foetus was taken to the Cooper Hospital morgue.

“We have registered an offence against an unidentified woman under section 318 of the Indian Penal Code for concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body,” said police sub-inspector Chetan Rathod of Khar police station.

He added that a municipal cleaner spotted the foetus near the garbage bin and informed the police.

“It is very difficult to trace the parents of the foetus. However, we are
talking with people of the area and investigating the case from all possible angles,” said senior police inspector Ajit Sawant.

A similar incident had happened on February 2 last year when a two-day-old infant was found abandoned outside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation office at Bandra (West).

Then, Tukaram Phatak, 38, a watchman at the H-West Ward office of BMC spotted the infant opposite the BMC office and informed the local police about it. The police then reached the spot and admitted the newborn to Bhabha Hospital.
