She killed herself even before she took the test
She feared that she would fail in Economics in the Third Year BCom (TYBCom) exams, starting on March 25. She dreaded that her parents wouldn’t be able to bear the ignominy of it. So, she took the easy way out. Shamal Surve, 20, killed herself at her New Mhada complex residence in Goregaon on Wednesday night. “Do not tear open my body for a post mortem,” she wrote in her suicide note.
The student of Sanskar Dham Vidyalaya hanged herself from the ceiling fan, using her mother’s sari. In a one-page note, written in Marathi, she poured out her desperation: “How will my parents face people if I fail? I don’t want them to face such a situation.”
Shamal aspired to be a chartered accountant, said her mother, Mahananda. “She was not worried about other subjects. She was only scared of Economics as her preparation was not up to the mark,” she said, her voice choking.
She went on to add that her daughter’s hectic schedule left her with very little time for studies. “She used to start her day at 6 am. After college, she had her accounts and typing classes, and would not be back home before 8pm.”
On Wednesday morning, Shamal went to meet her computer class teacher. There was no trace of abnormality in her behaviour. So, her parents suspected nothing. Around 8pm, Mahananda left home to visit a relative in Jogeshwari and Shamal’s father, Shashikant, an employee at Navy Nagar, left home for night duty. When Mahananda returned home an hour and half later, she found her daughter hanging from the ceiling fan.
The family members and relatives were in a state of shock. “Her parents were proud of her and never ever put pressure on her or their younger son, who appeared in the HSC exams this year,” said a relative.
