MUMBAI: The second edition of the Indian Cricket League, which starts on Sunday, is going to be even bigger and better than the first. The first element to be pumped up is the prize money, the prize money, which now reads a whopping $ 3.8 million.

The Rs 12.33 crore prize chest was announced on Saturday, and will make the ICL one of the toughest-fought cricketing events ever. Of most interest is the question of which team bags a winning purse to the tune of Rs 2.5 crore. The runner-up will settle for Rs 1.25 crore while the third place will be richer by Rs 50 lakh.

And prizes don’t only come at the end. Every match of the league stage will be fiercely contested, as the financial incentive for every win is a handsome Rs 25 lakh.

As far as individual prizes are concerned, the Man of the Match will be richer by Rs 2 lakh while the Man of the Series will walk away with a humungous Rs 40 lakh.

Former India wicket-keeper and Executive Board member of the Indian Cricket League (ICL), Kiran More, said “financial incentive is an important motivating factor for professional cricketers, and we at the ICL are proud to announce a magnificent corpus of Rs. 12.33 crore for the ‘Edelweiss 20s Challenge.’ This represents the breaking of new barriers in the history of domestic Indian cricket.”

Tony Greig, Executive Board member of the ICL, said, “it is a fulfilling experience to see the ICL make rapid strikes in terms of growth and quality in only its first year of operations.

Multiple venues, additional teams, an improved player base and, to top it all,  very impressive prize money to be won, should make the tournament an enthralling experience for both  the players and cricket alike.”

The league promises to be a 30-day barrage of non-stop pulsating cricket, and will be held in three different venues - Hyderabad, Chandigarh (Panchkula) and Gurgaon.

Two new teams have been added up to the tournament - the Ahmedabad Rockets, led by Damien Martyn, and the Lahore Badshahs, which is to be led by the former Pakistani captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.

It will be exciting to watch new players of the stature of Jason Gillispie, Damien Martyn, Michael Kasprowizc, Andre Adams, Jimmy Maher, Justin Kemp, Shane Bond and Lou Vincent strut their stuff in ICL colours.

The Lahore Badshahs are an all-Pakistani side, with Inzy leading the likes of Imran Farhat, Azhar Mahmood, spin duo Saqlain Mushtaq, Mushtaq Ahmed, Mohammed Sami, Imran Farhat, Rana Naved-ul-Hasan, Imran Nazir, Arshad Khan and Hassan Reza.
