MUMBAI: Despite India's double victory in cricket in Sydney and Kuala Lumpur, the celebrations here were muted because Indian spectators have not taken kindly to the money power that has come to play a huge part in the running of game, Shiv Sena said on Tuesday.

An editorial in 'Saamana', the Shiv Sena mouthpiece said 'though these two victories, the under-19 World Cup in Kuala Lumpur and India's decisive six-wicket victory over Australia in the first finals in Sydney, had scripted two golden chapters in cricketing history, the euphoria in India was missing.'

The Sena mouthpiece said though cricket lovers in India were glued to their TV sets, they did not spontaneously celebrate India's stupendous victory because the manner in which the Indian cricketers were auctioned by the Indian Premier League (IPL) was rankling them.

"This should be lesson for the cricketers that if the game degenerates into a money market where players are auctioned then people will lose interest in this sport," the editorial added.

The good outcome of the victory for the Under-19 players was that BCCI announced a Rs 15 lakh award for each of the winning members. It is natural that when these youngsters mature as senior players they will make money in crores.

"But the one question that still remains unanswered is the future of other sports in India. When Indian players performed well internationally in cricket, the same day India also performed outstandingly well in hockey and chess. Had these players also given what they deserved, then things would have been still better, the editorial added.
