MUMBAI: Electricity failure in the Maharaja Lounge of Delhi airport on Friday resulted in Naimesh Mishra, a hardcore vegetarian businessman from Mumbai, in getting his first taste of blood. Mishra had a bite of the chicken sandwich served to him by mistake by the lounge staff in the darkness.
Mishra, the director of Patel Tours and Travels, Andheri (E), Mumbai, was at the Delhi airport waiting to catch the Indian Airlines flight, IC 813, to Kathmandu.
He was sitting in the Maharaja Lounge and ordered a cheese sandwich with a vegetable patty. Suddenly, all lights went off in the lounge and when his food arrived, Mishra did not know what was in store for him. “I just had a bite of the sandwich and realised that I had eaten chicken and threw up,” he says.
He then quickly summoned the lounge staff who told him that it all happened as there was no electricity. They allegedly said that they were sorry but could do nothing about it. Mishra’s head was reeling with anger. “I am from a Brahmin family and do not eat even cakes as they are made of eggs,” he says. “But the carelessness of these people has hurt my religious beliefs tremendously,” he adds.
What angered him all the more was that the lounge manager refused to see him. It was only after he spoke to DNA that the manager presented himself. “I will take legal action against these people so that this doesn’t happen to other vegetarians in the future,” he said.
When contacted, Chandra Kumar, the Indian spokesperson from Delhi confirmed the incident. “We have acknowledged the passenger’s complaint and have taken up the matter with Hotel Intercon which is the service provider of the Lounge,” said Kumar. “Only on Monday will we come to know what action they have taken against those responsible,” he adds.
