Official team to visit Patan today

AHMEDABAD: The Patan gangrape incident threatens to become politicised with the Centre sending its own team to inquire into the incident. The central government is unhappy with the “casual manner” in which Narendra Modi's government is treating the Patan gangrape incident and has delegated a two-member parliamentary team comprising Congress leaders Prabha Thakur and Krishna Tirath to visit the victim on February 11.

According to sources, the central government has ostensibly taken the Dalit girl's gangrape issue very seriously and has, therefore, decided to depute a high-level delegation to get first hand information and details regarding the whole issue.

“The delegation members would meet the victim, her family members, authorities at the PTC and government officials during their visit,” said a senior source, who is dealing with the matter. Thakur and Tirath are members of the women's empowerment committee of parliament.

“This is a very serious issue as a girl belonging to a BPL family has been gangraped a number of times by six teachers. It's very shameful that such an incident has taken place in the state,” said a senior MP from Gujarat.

However, he ruefully added that chief minister Narendra Modi's government has not taken the issue with due seriousness and treated it in a “casual manner”.
