MUMBAI: Mumbai’s tryst with uncommonly cold weather appears to be over. Instead of hitting the predicted all-time low of 8 degrees Celsius, the city is going to get warmer over the next few days, says the meteorological department. Weather forecasters say mercury is on the rise, though it will grow warmer gradually over the following week.

The weather bureau recorded a maximum temperature of 24 degrees Celsius, and a minimum of 11.8 degrees Celsius at Colaba on Saturday — higher than the below-10 degree minimum temperatures over the last few days.

“The forecast shows the minimum temperature will be about 10 degrees Celsius,” says S Sandekar, duty assistant at the weather bureau. “We are expecting the temperature to rise to over 11-12 degree Celsius over the coming days. The cold wave will, hopefully, subside soon.”

Santa Cruz recorded a maximum of 26.4 degree Celsius and a minimum of 8.6 degree Celsius for the day. The meterological department also predicts that the cold wave conditions prevailing over the city in the last few days, is also likely to blow over during the next 24 hours.

Forecasters say relatively subdued winds are the cause for rising temperatures. Wind velocity for the day was between 5 and 10 kmph compared with the velocity two days ago, which was 40 kmph.

According to Met department dy DG CVV Bhadram, “The change is very gradual. The city is not going to see a sudden increase to 24 degrees Celsius. The temperatures will increase by one degree a day. This can be attributed to a change in weather patterns and wind direction.” a_anita@dnaindia.net
