MUMBAI: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh on Friday claimed that he was threatened by an unidentified caller hours before his media conference in Mumbai last week.

Singh said here that the caller threatened to 'eliminate' him and even perform his last rites. He declined knowledge of who the caller could be and refused to speculate on who was responsible.

Last Saturday, hours after the alleged threat, supporters belonging to Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) masqueraded as journalists and disrupted Singh's press conference.

"That day, MNS activists even turned violent and attacked Samajwadi Party workers," state party president Abu Asim Azmi said.

Singh also slammed the Maharashtra government and Mumbai Police for adopting a 'soft stance' against those behind the violence against north Indian migrants, which has tarnished the cosmopolitan fabric of the country's commercial capital.

"Last week, I personally lodged a first information report (FIR) against Raj Thackeray but so far no action has been taken," said Singh.

The city was calm on Friday after the violence it saw over the past few days, but the police continued their vigil at sensitive locations.

Friday evening, Samajwadi Party workers took to 'Gandhigiri' and greeted suburban train commuters and general public with flowers in Bandra in north-west Mumbai.

"We have appealed to people to fight for nationalism, eradicate poverty, unemployment and not to resort to parochial and divisive tactics," said Samajwadi Party Mumbai unit president Farooq Ghosi.

Similarly, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also held a peace rally at Azad Maidan, south Mumbai, exhorting people to shun violence.
