NEW DELHI: You’ve hidden that dirty, rusty LPG cylinder in the deep recesses of the kitchen for long. It’s time to flaunt it now.
Under a pilot programme in Mumbai, Pune and Bangalore, transparent LPG cylinders will soon be launched. This will also help to figure out how much gas you get when you buy one cylinder, and how much you use.
But there is a catch. You want beautiful gas, you pay: since these cylinders won’t be subsidised, they may cost as high as Rs 629 compared to the Rs 298 that domestic consumers have to pay, said a senior official in the ministry of petroleum and natural gas.
The deadly red cylinders are already bearing the brunt of cold winter.
At least, that is what the oil honchos say though chances are the opaque cylinder has less LPG than the standard 14.2 kg domestic cylinder should have and the refill problems being faced are due to diversion of domestic gas for commercial use.
Oil marketing companies (OMCs) are conducting surveys to find out whether consumers will pay the higher price for the transparent cylinders in a scenario where many are buying in black for anything between Rs 350-600. “The cylinders will be available 24 hours and will be like a premium service,” said an official.
The pricey cylinder made of fibre may be transparent and safer and may require only a change in government norms for being put to use, but how transparent will the process of ordering a refill be is anybody’s guess. It may not put an end to the woes of subsidised LPG consumers.
Despite IOC chairman Sarthak Behuria’s lament that the demand was growing, ministry figures show that the demand for domestic LPG has grown only about 5.5% during April-December 2007 compared to the previous year.
