Two Sonepat students to get bravery award

The National Bravery Award 2007 will be given to a 17-year-old girl student Babita and a 15-year-old student Amarjeet of Sonepat district by the PM Dr. Manmohan Singh.

SONEPAT: The National Bravery Award 2007 will be given to a 17-year-old girl student Babita and a 15-year-old student Amarjeet of Bali Qutabpur village in Ganaur sub-division of Sonepat district by the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on January 24 at New Delhi.
   
They will be awarded for showing courage and bravery in saving the lives of their classmates when their school bus fell into the 15 ft. deep water of the Western Yamuna Canal near Ahulana village on August 1, 2006.
   
Babita is a class XI student whereas Amarjeet is studying in class XII.
   
The ill-fated bus carrying 29 stuents both boys and girls of Bali Qutabpur and Sardhana villages was on its way to their school namely Satkumbha Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School at Kheri Gujjar village.
   
When it reached near Ahulana village the driver lost his control resulting in its falling in the Western Yamuna Canal.
   
Both Babita and Amarjeet managed to come out from the bus after smashing the windowpanes of the driver's seat and jumped into the canal for saving the classmates.
   
They showed courage and succeeded in saving the lives of their classmates. As many as 23 students were saved but the lives of six others were lost as they drowned in the canal water.    

The family members of Babita and Amarjeet are happy on their selection for the National Bravery Award 2007. The state government had already honoured them with the cash award of Rs 31,000 and commendation certificates each for showing bravery.
