ULFA targets security forces, triggers 3 grenade attacks

GUWAHATI: At least 14 people were injured as ULFA militants carried out three grenade attacks in Assam on the eve of Bihu celebrations and the run up to Republic Day.
 
Fourteen people were injured, seven of them critically, when a powerful grenade exploded in front of Paltan Bazaar police station near the Guwahati Railway Station here around 7.30 pm.
 
The critically injured included a minor girl, CRPF personnel and an Assam police personnel.
 
Police claim the militants targeted a CRPF patrol party in the area.
 
In another incident, three militants lobbed a grenade at an army camp of 44 Field Regiment at Halua under Borhat police station in Sivasagar district at 7.45 pm. But the grenade exploded a few metres away from the camp.
 
There was no casualty and the army personnel opened fire at the militants who managed to escape into the nearby jungles.
 
During the day, another grenade exploded at Rajivnagar in Kahilipara area of the city but there was no casualty and a house was partially damaged.
 
According to intelligence inputs, the ULFA is planning major sabotage on or before January 26.
