MADURAI: 'Jallikattu', a sport in which youths tame wild bulls, was reportedly organised in a remote village in Sivaganga district hours after the Supreme Court declined to vacate a stay on the age-old sport on the ground that the animals were subjected to cruel harassment.

A case was registered against the organisers on Saturday for holding the event on Friday at Soorakudi village, about 50 km from here in defiance of the apex court order, officials said.

According to sources, bulls from various southern districts participated in the 'Jallikattu' held around 3 pm and the winners were awarded prizes.

Police officials said the organisers of the Soorakudi Jallikattu had conducted the event despite having a written undertaking that they would not do so.

The sport, the history of which is traced back to the days of Pandya dynasty in the 13th century, is normally held in scores of villages across the 11 Southern districts of the state during the three-day Pongal festivities, starting on Jan 14.

Police officials apprehend they would have problems in implementing the order if the organisers from different villages defy the court orders and went ahead with conducting the 'Jallikattu' as they lack sufficient manpower.

Meanwhile, the apex court order continued to evoke strong reactions from local people and organisers of the event in several villages.

Veeran Ambalam, one of the participants in the Jallikattu said the Supreme Court was not probably aware of the series of measures taken by organisers on the directions of the Madras High court to hold the event without causing any harm to the animals or contestants.
