CHENNAI: Dubbing as an 'eye wash' the offer made by private manufacturers to supply cement at a subsidised rate to the economically backward class, AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa on Friday asked Tamil Nadu Government to take steps to make price reduction common to all without any conditions.

Expressing her doubts over the feasibility of the proposal, she said the Government had not explained what was the total manufacturing capacity of the cement companies in Tamil Nadu and their quantum of sale per month.

How much percentage of the total capacity had they come forward to offer at the subsidised rate, she asked.

Referring to the announcement that the cement companies would adopt certain districts near their locations and provide subsidised cement to the economically backward section, Jayalalithaa wondered what would become of the districts which had no cement companies close by.

"Will the cement companies' offer of 20 lakh bags per month be sufficient enough to meet the demand of the middle class people? Who will monitor the supply of subsidised cement every month," she asked.

She alleged that the proposal would be beneficial only to DMK men.
