Shiv Sena led alliance in the BMC seems to have omitted chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and other senior Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leaders from the list of invitees for the inauguration of Dr Bhau Daji Lad Musuem.

The museum, which won the Unesco award for heritage restoration in 2005, has been closed to public for two years. Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray will inaugurate the museum on January 4.

The saffron combine’s guest list, however, includes BJP national general secretary Gopinath Munde, Sena MP Mohan Rawle and MLA Arun Gawli, whose party—the Akhil Bhartiya Sena—is an alliance partner of the combine in the BMC.

The function will be attended by all group leaders in the BMC including Congress leader Rajhans Singh. Interestingly, Deshmukh had offered to remain present for the inauguration had it been done, as scheduled previously, at the hands of President Pratibha Patil. Mayor Shubha Raul said as this was a BMC function, Deshmukh did not feature in the invitee list.

Meanwhile, with barely a day left for the function, preparations for the event are on in full swing. Tasneem Mehta, museum’s managing trustee said, “We are preparing posters and materials for the function. A video on the restoration will be screened on the occasion. There will also be a special exhibition of photographs of the museum before and after renovation.”

Meanwhile, Raul clarified that BMC would bear the expenditure incurred for the function. The restoration was done by the BMC with help from the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage and financial support from the Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation.

The museum houses a rich collection of about 4,000 maps of the city, artefacts and manuscripts.  Mehta claimed that the musuem would also carry an exhibit the city’s origins, throwing light on the diverse communites in the city.
