NEW DELHI: From stepping up security to prosecuting drunk drivers and making Connaught Place a congestion-free area -- the capital's police have taken a series of steps to ensure a incident-free New Year's Eve.
Police Commissioner Y S Dadwal will himself be patrolling from 10 pm to 3 am on D-day to ensure everything passes off peacefully.
Security has also been beefed up in the city with police personnel being deployed in plainclothes and uniform at various locations such as markets, near hotels and points of gatherings, a senior police official said.
To check drunk driving, the police have constituted teams equipped with Alcometers (breathe analysers).
"They will check motorists suspected to be drunk. Such offenders can be prosecuted with fine of Rs 2,000 or punishment provided in the MV Act," DCP (Traffic) Suvashish Choudhary said here.
"Our emphasis will be on drunk driving, speed driving and triple riding," he said, adding 44 companies of extra force have been deployed to patrol on main roads and points of gathering.
The official said that in order to keep Connaught Place, the likely hub of New Year's Eve revelry, free from congestion, traffic will not be allowed to proceed towards the area after 7.30 pm.
Since no traffic will be allowed to move in the Inner, Middle and Outer Circles of Connaught Place, alternate routes have been chalked out by the police.
Motorists visiting various hotels located in the restricted area have been given parking labels which along with invitation cards or tickets will authorise them to go with their vehicles to their respective hotels.
