ISLAMABAD: For the second day in a row, Pakistani media has maintained it'll not buy the government's version on how Benazir Bhutto was killed, saying the official explanation 'lacks credibility and consistency'.

Leading newspapers in their editorials maintained that the security provided to Bhutto was inadequate and questioned why a post-mortem was not carried out on her body by the regime of President Pervez Musharraf.

The Pakistani government yesterday said that Bhutto did not fell to an assassin's bullet but was fatally wounded by a lever in the sun-roof when she had ducked back into the car following the firing of a few shots at her.

But, in its editorial, titled, 'No one believes the government', the 'Daily Times' said that the final version of events has not cut ice with the public for two reasons - lack of credibility and lack of consistency.

"Most people are cynical of government any way. But this regime is unpopular for a host of reasons and its credibility is rock bottom. Then there is the stupid way in which its spokesmen have gone about explaining the events of that fateful day.

"The established facts are that security was weak, which enabled the gunmen and suicide bomber to come so close to Ms Bhutto and actually open fire at her from a short range, before detonating himself. And the responsibility for lack of adequate security must lie with the government, especially since she had time and again implored the government to improve it," the daily said.

Similarly, refusing to take the government's final version of events, another leading daily 'The News' questioned why her body was not subjected to a post-mortem.

"The most shocking thing is that there has been no post-mortem. As a result no one can say with certainty what the cause of death was.

"The state is required to conduct a through investigation; which includes a post-mortem and the sealing off of the crime scene and only people with special equipment, gloves and soft shoes allowed to cross.

"How did Ms Bhutto die? Who killed her? Why? Was it a bomb? A bullet? A sunroof lever? A heart attack? How many bullets? Were they fired from the back, the front or the side? Were the shooter and the bomber the same person? Was there a sniper? The answer has been buried in Garhi Khuda Bux," the daily said.

It also urged the members of the Judicial Commission set up by the government to carefully come to a conclusion as "there is no body and no signs of any evidence to suggest how Ms Bhutto died".

Even the 'Dawn' pointed out that Bhutto's security was lax and held the government responsible for that.

"We will probably never be able to find out who masterminded her killing and who was actually her assassin. Let alone this assassination we have yet to unravel the mysteries surrounding the deaths of past leaders," it said.
