A leak of the CBI report on Nandigram violence in the media shows the CPM in a poor light

NEW DELHI: Stung by the leak of the CBI report on Nandigram violence in a section of the media, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Thursday took up the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

CPI(M) big bosses are upset with details of a report which appeared in a section of the press showing the party in a poor light. The report inter alia said that some CPI(M) activists wearing police uniform had fired at the peasants in Nandigram and were also involved in a few incidents of rape.

Earlier in the day, talking to media persons, politburo member Sitaram Yechury and Buddhadeb rubbished the accusations. The chief minister said he could not comment as the matter is sub judice but hastened to add: “It is bogus. I will take up the matter with the Centre.”

Taking strong objection to the “selective leak”, Yechury also said: “We will take up the matter with the Centre.” Yechury said the report was supposed to be presented to the Kolkata high court in a sealed cover. He checked up with Buddhadeb who said it was yet to be presented to the court.

CPI(M) sources said they believe that some Congressmen are behind the CBI leak. But they declined to say what the PM’s reaction was when the West Bengal chief minister brought it to his notice. “It is a clear case of selective leakage,” said Yechury. Asked if he had doubts about any political party playing a role in the “leakage” of the CBI report, the CPI(M) leader said, “It is for the media to interpret”.
