The crime branch of the city police on Monday busted a major fraud and arrested seven persons who allegedly siphoned off more than Rs10 lakh through dubious use of credit cards.
The racket came to light after police were tipped off about the credit cards of two customers of ICICI Bank being misused. Following this, police arrested Pappi, Maqbool, and Latif from Senapati Bapat Marg (Tulsi Pipe Road), Mahim (West), last week. Their interrogation led to the arrest of four others on Monday.
“Our investigation has revealed that Delhi-based Sayed would acquire credit cards using bogus documents and give them to his accomplices here,” a crime branch officer said. “The suspects would then get the credit limit of the cards increased and use them.”
The police are trying to verify if the suspects were conniving with bank officials, as it is usually not possible to hike the credit card limit without the involvement of bank officials.
The police have seized 13 credit cards of a private bank, two debit cards, three laptops, duplicate driving licences, ATM slips, and a credit card- swiping machine. They are also trying to find out the source of the credit cards and how the group managed to get so many credit cards.
The arrested — Mohammad Ibrahim Haji Abbasi alias Pappi, 37, Naushad Alam Maqbool, 28, Mohammad Zubai Anwar Latif, 21, Ehsan Maqbool Shaikh, 35, a tailor living at Malad, Noorul Rehmat Khan, 26, resident of Navi Mumbai, Mohan Rajan Devraj, 34, and Tahir Jamal Sayed, 50 — were produced before the metropolitan magistrate and remanded in police custody till December 24.
