KUALA LUMPUR: An 11-year-old boy accidentally shot dead his nine-year-old brother while playing with their grandfather's loaded shotgun.

The victim and his brother were alone in their grandfather's orchard in Kampung Pulau Salak in Sarawak when they found his shotgun on Wednesday afternoon, reports said on Friday.

The brothers were playing with the gun when the nine-year-old decided to rest on a hammock. His brother said he was not aware the gun was loaded and it went off when he tripped on it.

The victim was shot in the head.

"I didn't know the shotgun was loaded. As I walked down the steps, I tripped and the gun went off. Next thing I knew, my brother was no longer breathing. I've shot my brother and best friend," the elder boy said.

Police said the parents buried their son without informing the authorities. They were informed by a villager after the burial and the police said it has obtained a court order to exhume the body.

Kuching police chief Assistant Commissioner Wong Wai Loong said the case had been classified as sudden death.

"We are discussing the case with the deputy public prosecutor. The case may be reclassified as murder," Wong said.
