It was English that did him in. For, 18-year-old Anil Pal, who hanged himself to death in his Dindoshi residence on Wednesday, took the drastic step after being unable to cope up with his lectures in college, where the medium of language was English.

Anil, who studied till Class 12 in Hindi in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, used to regularly score a first class. However, he failed miserably in the first semester examination of FYBSc in the city, scoring a mere two out of 50 in botany and a zero in chemistry.

Anil, a student of the Ismail Yusuf College, Jogeshwari, came to Mumbai six months ago on his father’s insistence. “His father Asaram wanted Anil to become a doctor and study further in the city,” said Uttam Khairmode, senior police inspector, Dindoshi police station. Anil stayed with his father, elder brother and his wife at Royal Building, Kasam Baug, in Dindoshi.

However, Anil had a tough time understanding the lecturers who spoke in English. Fearing that he would fail to cope up with the studies, Anil regularly told his father that he wanted to return to his native place. “Although his father agreed, he asked him to complete the year and then leave the city,” says Khairmode.

Anil’s elder brother Ratan, a medical representative, says: “He was very depressed after failing the first semester in October. However, if he had even hinted that he was upset, we would have consulted a psychiatrist.”

On Thursday evening, around 5.15pm, Anil hanged himself from a fan, using a sari. Interestingly, on Tuesday, Anil approached HD Pandey, Hindi professor and career counsellor, Ismail Yusuf College, to enquire about hostel facilities.
“He said he had personal problems and was looking for accommodation”, says Pandey.
