German jailed for attack

The 23-yr-old is guilty of brutally attacking Indians 

BERLIN: A 23-year-old German man was jailed for eight months on Wednesday for his role in a mob attack on a group of Indian immigrants in Germany. 

Prosecutors said the man forced open the door of a pizza restaurant where eight Indian men had taken refuge as they were chased through the town of Muegeln in August.

“The accused played a leading role in the attack,” said judge Klaus Denk at the end of the one-day trial.

The man, who was not named, faced charges of inciting racial hatred and damaging property.

Three of the Indians were so badly beaten by their attackers that they needed hospital treatment. Twelve people have been investigated in connection with the incident, including four of the eight Indians.

Eight of the 12 eventually faced no charges because of a lack of witnesses.

Concerns over racist attacks on immigrants in the former communist eastern Germany re-surfaced this week after Muslims and Africans were beaten up in the city of Magdeburg.
