CHANDIGARH: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bhartiya Janata (BJP) will jointly celebare the birtday of the Punjab Chief Minister and SAD president Parkash Singh Badal as 'Punjab Ekta Divas' on December eight.

A galaxy of national leaders, including the BJP stalwarts will take part in the main function to be organized at Bathinda.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the Co-Ordination Committee of the alliance partners here on Wednesday.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Babir Punj, who is in charge of the Punjab affairs for the BJP, said that the event would be organised in keeping with the stature of Badal in Punjab and national politics.

Although Badal currently heads the government in his state, his birthday would be celebrated by the two parties as 'a people's event'.

The SAD is pulling all stops to ensure that the day becomes a symbolic milestone in highlighting Punjab's unique place in national and international history, he said.

One of the highlights of the day would be the laying of the foundation stone of a world class cricket academy and stadium in Bathinda.

The project, one of the dream ventures of the SAD working president Sukhbir Singh Badal, is being planned on a scale unprecedented in the history of sports infrastructure in the country and would make Punjab one of the major sporting destinations in the world.

Sukhbir is also keen on giving a fresh impetus to the hockey tradition in Sansarpur (Jalandhar) as well as putting the soccer nursery in Mahilpur (Hoshiarpur) on the global sporting map by providing state fo the art sproting infrastructure at these two centers.

All this would be in keeping with the senior Badal's love for sports and sportspersons.

The SAD and the BJP are working in close unison to make the event a memorable occasion, and despite Badal's own known diffidence in the matter, the day would be marked by a host of high profile development projects, a party spokesman said.

Apart from using the occasion to show case Punjab's rich cultural and religious heritage, the occasion would also focus on the stellar role played by the state in various fields, including the freedom struggle, the defense of the country as well as the outstanding contribution of the Punjabi farmers in making the country self reliant in food.

"Badal has always shied away from celebrating anything personal but considering that he is the most powerful symbol of the post independence Punjab, the two parties are keen his complete identification with the people of his state should be saluted on this day." said Harcharan Bains, Media Advisor to the Chief Minister.
