Delhi skipper carries Tendulkar’s willow, which he may use against Mumbai in the Ranji game from today

MUMBAI: The ball flew off the sweet spot of Delhi skipper Virender Sehwag’s willow. At the Wankhede, Sehwag, who arrived in the city on Thursday, padded up and went about giving the red cherry a mighty whack.

Everything on show was typical Sehwag; clean-hitting with minimum fuss that yielded maximum effect. Sehwag has completed two of the three chapters in his comeback story.

He is yet to reclaim his Test spot and runs against Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai would be a big plus.

So while packing his kit before leaving from Delhi to Mumbai, Sehwag slipped in a special SS Sunridges bat — one that he took from none other than Sachin Tendulkar.

What’s more, the bat also has a personal message, from one master to another, which reads: ‘Dear Viru, Wishing You the Best Always’ and is signed by Tendulkar. At the toe of the bat in bold letters is written ‘SACHIN..T’.

On the eve of the game, Sehwag put the bat to good use as he indulged in a batting session that lasted a little over half-an-hour.

While the bat manufacturer has in its product range the Viru 309 series, that has been put into production to commemorate Sehwag’s triple hundred, the first and only one by an Indian, against Pakistan at Multan, the Delhi batsman, approached Tendulkar for the bat.

Without a moment’s hesitation, the Master Blaster handed over the work of wood Sehwag asked for and the Delhi skipper could well use bat when he plays against Mumbai in the Elite game. Sehwag likes the feel and grip of the bat and enjoys it’s ‘lightness’.

However, Sehwag wants to let the bat do the talking and didn’t want to reveal too much. “I don’t want to talk much now. Sachin may get upset. If he gets upset he may not give me his bats anymore,” the champion opener told DNA.

Over the next four days, Sehwag will have his task cut-out as he leads his team against champions Mumbai. Both teams have eight points and while Delhi is bolstered by the arrival of Sehwag and Gambhir from national duty, Mumbai will miss the services of opener Wasim Jaffer, who is playing the first Test against Pakistan in Delhi.

Mumbai skipper Amol Muzumdar said that it would be a toss-up between the two youngsters — Iqbal Abdulla, the left-arm spinner and Bhavesh Patel, the uncapped leg-spinner — as to who would join Ramesh Powar in the slow bowling department.
