Cleft lip is the commonest congenital deformity in developing countries

When Sushma Bhanushali delivered a healthy baby boy at a Palghar-hospital three months ago, the Bhanushalis instead of rejoicing were shocked.

One look at the baby, who was born with a cleft lip and palate, and Sushma’s superstitious mother-in-law, declared that the baby had suffered because Sushma had used a pair of scissors to cut something on Nagpanchami and the baby’s lips resembled a snake’s forked tongue.

Setting aside superstitions, the Bhanushalis approached a pediatrician who referred them to Sushrusha Citizens’ Cooperative Hospital in Dadar. On Sunday, three-month old baby, Sunny Bhanushali underwent an hour-long surgery for cleft lip and anterior palate.

“He will need at least four more surgeries and regular follow-up with the doctors till the age of 19. Sunny will be able to develop teeth, and will never be teased by his peers on account of his looks,” assured cranio-facial consultant and plastic surgeon Dr Nitin Mokal, who performed the surgery.

“When born with such a deformity, the baby should be shown to a plastic and recontructive surgeon immediately,” advised Mokal, who is also the project co-ordinator Smile Train, a US-based NGO which supports free surgeries for patients with cleft lip, palate and related deformities in the age group three months to 40 years.

“Cleft lip and palate is the commonest congenital deformity seen in a majority of developing countries and it is caused due to poor ante-natal care among expectant mothers. It can also be hereditary sometimes,” said Dr Mokal.

According to the WHO, it is seen in nine live births out of every 1000. It is necessary for the patient to approach the doctor for follow-ups, says Dr Mokal.
