With the introduction of high-tech railway rakes on November 12, a commuter does not come out staggering and gasping for breath. The engineering is such that there is  room for fresh air for everyone.

In the existing suburban rakes, people rush out gasping especially during the peak hours.
The new rakes have been designed in such a manner that there is adequate passage of air and one need not inhale polluted air exhaled by others.

“On an average, 0.018 cubic metre of carbon dioxide is released by a person in an hour. As such, over 10 cubic metres is exhaled per hour if the carrying capacity of the coach is 570 passengers.

Due to this entry of fresh air is limited which leads to discomfort and fatigue to passengers,” said PC Sehgal, managing director of Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). MRVC is the executing agency for railway projects in Mumbai.

Ashish Phadke, a resident of Borivili, said, “There are certain problems with the new rake like inadequate leg space between the seats and slippery flooring.

But the rake is well-ventilated and one does not feel suffocated or exhausted even during the rush hour.”

The new coaches have been fitted with external air blowers which push fresh air inside. “The ventilation system comprises four blowers per coach fitted to the end wall panels.

With the help of carbon dioxide meters imported from Finland, we studied the emissions per coach,” said Sehgal.

As per the study, the carbon dioxide level ranges between 800 PPM to 1,450 PPM between Churchgate and Virar as against 800 PPM to 2,450 PPM in the old rakes without adequate ventilation system.

Also, since these coaches are energy-efficient, the amount of coal burnt for generating electricity is expected to reduce thereby reducing emissions of carbon.

The carbon credit thus earned will be traded by the Railway with the help of World Bank.
