More than 2,400 million tonnes of electricity — enough to meet electricity demands of two cities like Mumbai — can be generated with solar energy.
“Our scientists are working towards making provisions whereby this energy can be stored and used when needed,” said Kirit Parikh, member of Planning Commission, last week during his visit to the city.
Addressing a seminar at the Maharashtra Economic Development Council (MEDC) during its golden jubilee celebration, Parikh highlighted the power crisis and the way it would gradually get grim over a period of time.
If statistics are to be believed, demand for electricity which currently stands 1.6 lakh MW will increase to a whopping over eight lakh MW by 2025.
“In such a situation the country will need to explore all its resources —renewable as well as non-renewable sources,” Parikh pointed.
Electricity through solar energy can be generated without much investment. Roof-tops, deserts, non-productive land can be used for generation.
“If solar energy is utilised effectively it will require only 10 million hectares of land across the country. At the current efficiency of 15 per cent the country can generate 2,400 million tonnes of electricity,” Parikh said.
This needs to be improved to 30 per cent and even up to 50 per cent for optimum use.
Although available abundantly , it is estimated that power generated through this source of energy would cost Rs20per kW per hour.
He said that the cost of solar power should be made compatible with other sources of electricity at around Rs4 per kW per hour.
“Electricity generated through this source must be made available when required. Technology for the same is on the horizon. Scientists are optimistic and exploring possibilities whereby electricity once generated can be used for future purposes.
‘Solar Tower’ concept is being studied which would be directly connected with the grid for making backup provisions,” said Parikh.
