Maharashtra has been placed behind Delhi as the favoured destination for international tourists. This is according to nationwide figures on international and domestic tourism that were released by the Union Ministry of Tourism and Culture on October 13.

The ministry used figures from the World Trade Organisation’s Barometer, Reserve Bank of India and the Central Bureau of Immigration while compiling the survey.
Maharashtra hosted 14.5 per cent of the total number of international visitors last year, while Delhi recorded 17.3 per cent visitors.

Uttar Pradesh came in third with 11.6 per cent visitors. However, while the state has the second highest number when it comes to international tourism, it was placed sixth in terms of domestic tourists.

Maharashtra recorded a mere 3.7 per cent of the total number of domestic travellers in the period of 2006-07.

With 24.2 per cent of domestic tourism share, Andhra Pradesh grabbed first place, followed by Uttar Pradesh (22.9 per cent),

Tamil Nadu (12.7 per cent), Karnataka (7.8 per cent) and Rajasthan (5.1 per cent).
With 4.45 million international travellers setting foot on Indian soil, the country recorded a 13.5 per cent increase in international travellers as compared to 3.92 million travellers in 2005-06.

The country earned Rs29,604 crore in foreign exchange, 17.6 per cent over the year before.

The maximum number of travellers were from the United Kingdom (0.734 million), followed by the United States (0.697 million). The highest number of international travellers visiting India was seen in January this year.

However, India enjoys only 0.52 per cent of the global tourism market. It does not figure in the top 10 list of tourist arrival countries. France tops the list with 9.39 per cent. Spain (6.95 per cent) and the United States (6.07 per cent) come in second and third respectively. Among the Asian countries, China, with a 5.89 per cent share in the global market, is placed fourth. Meanwhile, 8.34 million Indians toured foreign destinations last year.
