West Bengal CM’s visit to Rizwanur’s house was greeted with black flags

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Saturday met the mother of Rizwanur Rehman who died under mysterious circumstances three weeks after his marriage to Priyanka Todi, the daughter of prominent industrialist Ashok Todi.

The CM was greeted with black flags and slogans like “Chief Minister Hai Hai” and “Please Give Us Justice” as he went inside the residence of Kishwar Jahan amid heavy police presence.

Bhattacharjee spent around 40 minutes with Kishwar Jahan and family members. Several posters hung outside the residence saying “CM, why are you fighting with us on CBI inquiry in High Court?” and “Why is nobody arrested yet?”

Rehman, a computer graphics teacher, was found dead near railway tracks on Sept 21.

It was alleged that officers of Kolkata Police, including DCP (headquarter) and DCP (detective department), had summoned him to the police headquarter and pressured him to send Priyanka back to her parents, despite their having married legally under the Special Marriage Act.

The CM requested the family to have faith. “Action will be taken against guilty, including police officers,” Rukbanur, Rizwanur’s brother, said quoting Bhattacharjee.

Rizwanur’s mother said, “He promised us justice.”
