Officials say Yangon has to resolve its issues internally

NEW DELHI: Much has been made about India's decision to go along with the UN Human Rights Council on condemning the crackdown on peaceful demonstrators by the military junta in Mynmar earlier this week.

However, India registered its dissent at the sharp tone adopted by the council. Many have seen this as a calibrated attempt by India to gradually change its position on Myanmar.

Earlier, foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee refused to comment saying it was an internal matter.

Since then, monks led protests. But even after the army cracked down on protestors, India refused to condemn the generals.

Officials have privately made it very clear that India's position on Myanmar has not changed as it firmly believed that the issue should be resolved by Yangon authorities through consultations without the rest of the world lecturing the
Generals on how to go bout it.

New Delhi's response came as a dampner to the pro-democracy activists operating out of this country.

“We were hugely disappointed by India's stand and the fact that the world's largest democracy is not standing by us at this critical hour,” said Soe Mynt a pro-democracy activist.

New Delhi took care to send out a strong message to the generals.

In Geneva, it  forced a change in the original EU resolution. It went along with the consensus on the resolution while registering its dissent with the “unhelpful tone.”

“We regret that the resolution adopted is not fully in conformity with India's stance for non-condemnatory approach wherein Myanmar authorities are engaged in a “constructive manner to facilitate peaceful outcome,” Indian officials explained.
