Team India's win dominates AICC gen secy’s meeting with Sonia Gandhi

NEW DELHI: Rahul Gandhi made a brief visit to his new office before leaving through a side exit, disappointing hundreds of Congressmen and mediapersons who had gathered at the Congress headquarters to witness the young leader's first day as general secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Nonetheless, his 20-minute visit was enough to spark off a media scramble and send his partymen into a frenzied bout of dancing and slogan-chanting.

Though a chair was kept vacant for him next to the one reserved for Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul appeared hesitant to occupy it. Rahul moved towards one of the chairs in the corner, but after much persuasion by his colleagues and a gentle nudge by Gandhi, he agreed to sit by his mother's side.

The meeting aimed at facilitating an interaction between Gandhi and her new team of office bearers. Like most new recruits on their first day in office, Rahul appeared conscious but relaxed as the talk turned to India's remarkable win in the T20 World Cup. Magarat Alva set the ball rolling by saying, “Madam (Gandhi), the youth are showing the way both in cricket", and soon others piped in.

Even the normally reticent Gandhi confessed that despite being a soccer fan she had rushed back from the vice-president's iftaar party to catch the last few overs. Rahul found  “Dhoni a remarkable leader and Yuvraj awesome”.

Outside Congress workers sang and danced and many of them argued that it was not a mere coincidence that Rahul was inducted on a day when India won the World Cup. “He is our  Dhoni and Yuvraj. He has Dhoni’s leadership qualities and Yuvraj's panache,” said AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi.
