NEW DELHI: Pakistan's World Cup jinx against India has persisted with their latest loss to the arch-rivals in the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship in Johannesburg on Monday.

Though the rivals did not meet in the first four editions of the World Cup in 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1987, India has triumphed each time the neighbours have clashed.

India and Pakistan first squared up as late as in the 1992. Batting first, India overcame a very slow start to reach 216 for 7, which proved enough to carve out a 43-run win. Even though Pakistan went on to win the title under the charismatic Imran Khan, India went home with some consolation.

The 1996 edition of the tournament saw the traditional rivals meet in the quarterfinal in Bangalore and here too, the hosts prevailed. Navjot Singh Sidhu's 93 and Ajay Jadeja's brisk 25-ball 45 propelled India to  287 and this time, Pakistan fell short by 39 runs.

In 1999, the neighbours locked horns in the fourth Super Sixes match at Manchester and Mohammad Azharuddin completed a hat-trick of wins against the neighbours as India cantered to a 47-run victory.

In 2003, Centurion was the venue when Sachin Tendulkar's breathtaking 98 powered India to a facile six-wicket victory.

Both India and Pakistan could not make it to the Super Eights stage of the West Indies World Cup and their early exit robbed the tournament of yet another high-voltage clash between two arch-rivals.

In the just-concluded Twenty20 World Cup, Pakistan came close to break the jinx in the group match against India, which ended in a tie and Shoaib Malik's side eventually lost 3-0 when the match was strecthed to bowl-out.
