KOLKATA: Kolkatans celebrated India's nail-biting victory in the Twenty20 championship over Pakistan in the finals at the Wanderers on Monday, despite the heavy rains lashing the city.

With most areas water-logged many did not get an opportunity to watch the match on television, but those fortunate enough cheered the Indian team.

Crackers were let off and sweets were distributed. The more enthusiastic arranged for bands where there was no water-logging problem.

As Pakistan went on losing wickets at regular intervals, the enthusiasm rose.

Former test player Pranab Roy said, "It's a fantastic victory. The victory is going to give Twenty20 a big boost in India."

"It is almost like a throwback to 1983, "said Sumit Majumdar, a private sector employee, comparing the triumph to the historic success of India in the World Cup 24 years ago.
