LUCKNOW: The Mayawati government unveiled its ‘Police Story – Part 2’ on Tuesday, discharging from duty 3,964 more newly-recruited constables and suspending six more IPS and 40 PPS officers. This is the second round of action taken against those found guilty in what is being now termed as the mother of all recruitment scams in UP.

The probe panel has found that amounts ranging from Rs2 to Rs4 lakh were taken for each job. IPS officers chairing recruitment boards clearly made a mockery of the system to please their political masters.

There are cases in which interviews were conducted in 18 seconds. There are numerous instances of cutting and overwriting in answer and tabulation sheets. “We have also come across cases in which answer sheets were taken home by candidates,” principal secretary (home) JN Chamber told reporters. Large-scale manipulation in physical tests has also been detected, he said.

Tuesday’s action takes the total of those dismissed to 10,468. The Mayawati government has already terminated the services of 6,504 constables recruited in 2005 and 2006. Already, 12 IPS officers have been suspended on charges of “criminal misconduct” in recruitment. The Mulayam Singh government had recruited about 22,000 police and PAC constables through 55 recruitment boards.

“The officers have been found guilty of large-scale irregularities,” Chamber said. The Shailja Kant Misra inquiry committee submitted its report on 11 more boards on Tuesday, of which recruitment of as many as 10 boards was done through “highly objectionable processes”, he added.

So far, the recruitment of only seven boards, which recruited about 3,000 constables, has been found to be above board. Inquiry of all boards will be completed by September 30, and fresh recruitment of constables will be done over the next six months.

Chamber said dismissed constables would be allowed to appear for fresh recruitment tests, provided there is no criminal case against them with regard to the impugned recruitment drive.
