AHMEDABAD: The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has had to shoot down its proposal to expand seats of its post-graduate programme for executives (PGPX) because of lack of faculty.

Faculty chairperson Prof Arvind Sahay said, “We don’t have sufficient faculty to provide the quality we insist upon. Faculty members are already loaded with work and till we recruit more faculty, expansion plans have been put on hold.”

This would result into a loss of Rs9.8 crore for the institute, which it would have accrued in a year as fees from the additional 70 students. The incumbent size of the PGPX batch is 70, which was proposed to be increased to 140, resulting into two sections. The fees have also been increased for the third batch from Rs10 lakh to Rs14 lakh per student.

The expansion was proposed in view of the rising popularity for the course. IIM-A has received a whopping 1,352 applications for the third batch, with several applications of GMAT scores exceeding 750. There is great demand for the course amongst recruiters as well, if the placement of the first batch is anything to go by.

At least five more faculty members are required. Going by the current recruitment drive, we may be able to expand in another couple of years, he said

IIM-A incurs a loss of around Rs1.73 lakh for every PGP student and is therefore dependent on the government funding.

“This expansion would have given some elbow room. The additional funds could have been spent on providing facilities to faculties since it is not within the institute’s purview to increase their salary,” an institute source said.

Faculty members came down heavily on the proposal in the faculty council meeting last week saying a 100% rise in the batch may not be beneficial as the quality of intake would go down.
