With the Ganesh festival round the corner, students of SP Jain Institute of Management Studies and Research (SPJIMR) have taken an initiative to educate people about the environmental impact of idols made of non-biodegradable material.

Their efforts are aimed at promoting eco-friendly Ganesh idols. Through this initiative, these students aspire to be eco-friendly managers.

Pursuing their management studies at SP Jain Institute of Management Studies, these 50-odd students organised an exhibition of Ganesh idols, made by school students from bio-degradable materials.

Students from city schools like Bombay Cambridge, Gyan Kendra High School, Raj Hans Vidyalaya, St Louis Convent School displayed their eco-friendly Ganesh idols at the Bhavan’s College cultural centre.

“We realise that there is a need to contribute to the unorganised sector. As the unorganised sector focuses primarily on social issues, environment is one such social issue that needs immediate attention in terms of creating awareness among the citizens,” informs Amita Patni, a first-year student from SPJIMR.

Amita adds, “Save the environment is the biggest challenge before the future managers. Through the management skills imbibed by us we can certainly make a difference to the environment around us.”

The exhibition organised by the students of SPJIMR on Sunday observed students preparing Ganesh idols made clay or bio-degradable material like jute, vegetables, coconut shells, food-grains and other natural materials.

“To inculcate environment concern among the children with the motive of being eco-friendly inculcate us with the practical knowledge of management in the unorganised sector and develops skills in public relations,” says Rahul Ramchandani another first year management student from SPJIMR.

Students from SPJIMR had also invited experts from non-governmental organisations to guide them and the school students about the environmental hazards caused due to the immersion of idols made of plaster of paris into lakes, rivers and sea. These students have carried out the activity of eco-Ganesha through their voluntary society called Lasting Initiative for Environment.
