New Delhi wants Dhaka to extradite Hamza - suspect in Hyderabad blasts

NEW DELHI: Is India's policy of wooing the army-backed interim government of Bangladesh backfired? Exasperated at the two begums' reluctance to take New Delhi's security concerns seriously, India quickly grasped the olive branch extended by the army-backed interim administration in Dhaka, turning a blind eye to the crack down on political activity in Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina, both former PM's, are behind bars and yet India's reaction has been wishy-washy.

Now that it is payback time for Dhaka, there is a deathly silence from the other end. There has been no official confirmation that Mohammed  Sharifuddin, known as Abu Hamza, is the same person Indian police are looking for. There is talk of the difficulties for extradition of Hamza, as India does not have an extradition treaty with Dhaka.

"Let's not jump the gun,'' says a senior Indian official. "Let us be sure that the man is really the person wanted by the Indian authorities. Let us give Dhaka a little time to investigate. It is only after we are certain that we can move forward. Extradition is not the immediate next step. First we need the confirmation,'' the official explained. India is giving some time to the military-backed government in Dhaka to confirm the news of the arrest.

Former Indian high commissioner to Dhaka Deb Mukherjee said, "We must not rush to judgment. We should wait and give some time to the authorities there to verify the facts first."

At the moment, India is willing to wait for action from Dhaka. But if Hamza is really in Dhaka and the administration is not willing to co-operate, New Delhi could review its policy and call for immediate and quick restoration of political rights for the two begums.
