MUMBAI: It is now clear that the working committee meeting in New Delhi will be on the Twenty20 tournament that the Board of Control for Cricket in India is planning to launch. Last week the Board officials announced the date of the working committee without disclosing the agenda. DNA has learnt that the agenda for the meeting is to finalise the modalities of the Twenty20 tournament.

Interestingly, the meeting has been called just 15 days before its annual general meeting which is scheduled to be held in the city on September 28. The very idea to launch the tournament, needless to say, is to counter the growing acceptance among the national and international players of the Indian Cricket League, an Essel Group venture which is scheduled to take off some time in October.

When Board president Sharad Pawar said BCCI would announce its own Twenty20 plans in the next 10-15 days at Leeds on Sunday, he was obviously hinting about the meeting and the plans to be decided there.

In fact, the Board officials’ visit to Singapore for a meeting with Cricket Australia officials is also aimed at the latest project. Vice-president Lalit Modi, Chief administrative officer Ratnakar Shetty and former president IS Bindra have gone to meet the CA officials for confabulations on the issue.

It was not immediately known how the Board wants to go about in its plan but information trickling in from the  sources reveal that the Board might even call for participation of international players for the tournament.

When contacted, Board secretary Niranjan Shah refused to say much about the tournament but he confirmed that the September 13 meeting will discuss the issue. He, however, denied that the Board’s latest project is a measure to counter the ICL. “Yes, we’re going to discuss the issue. It is a project we’ve been planning for sometime. And we’ll take a decision at the meeting,” was all he would reveal.
