ISLAMABAD: Pakistani cricketer turned politician Imran Khan has said politician should learn from the past and avoid any 'deal' with General Pervez Musharraf.

Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (Movement for Justice party) party chief criticised Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and its leadership for holding negotiations with President Musharraf, terming it a move against all democratic norms.

Urging Bhutto to avoid a deal with General Musharraf, Imran said it would only strengthen the hands of the dictator and have long-term effect on national politics.

"The need of the hour is a sound political culture where Parliament is supreme and the judiciary is totally independent," he told a seminar organised by the Lahore Bar Association on Friday.

He was quoted as saying by the 'Daily Times' newspaper on Saturday that the executive should operate within the limits provided in the constitution and all the institutions should be accountable to the people.

Imran flayed Bhutto last week for attempting a deal with Musharraf, terming it an act of 'treason'.

He categorised the negotiation as an attempt to jeopardise democracy in Pakistan and said it was being done at a time when General Musharraf had become vulnerable.

The former Pakistan cricket captain has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging President Musharraf holding dual posts of Army chief and head of state, and pleading that the General be prevented from taking part in the presidential elections.

Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf chief stated in the petition that President Musharraf had violated the Constitution by holding two offices and that his assumption of office of the president on the basis of the April 30, 2002 referendum was unconstitutional.
