Karat says joint committee will deliberate on N-deal

KOLKATA: CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat on Friday made it clear that the proposed formation of a joint committee to evaluate the various aspects of the Indo-US nuclear deal has closed all possibilities of the toppling of the union government.

"I do not think there is any possibility of toppling of the Union government at this situation. The formation of the joint committee is neither our victory nor the victory of the Congress," Karat told reporters during his brief visit to Kolkata here on Friday.

Earlier addressing the Naren Sen Memorial Lecture on "Strategic relationships in perspective of the Indo-US nuclear deal" here on Friday evening, Karat said that now it is up to the joint committee of political parties to debate on the various aspects of the agreement.

"We have asked the union government not to proceed with the deal any further especially not to approach IAEA. Let the joint committee evaluate the various aspects of the agreement. We do not want to go beyond that and we want to give requisite time to the union government," Karat said.

He said that ultimately it would be the people of the country who would decide whether the Left parties were right in their approach or not. "So, in the mean time we will go to the people and explain to them the long-term adverse economic effects of the deal on the livelihood of the common people."

"The government is saying that the deal will make the country self-sufficient in nuclear power and hence the people will be benefited through the supply of power. We, through our calculations will explain to the people that the power produced through imported nuclear reactors and fuel will be double the price per unit of what people are paying now," he said.

He also said that CPI(M) has chalked out a campaign programmes against the agreement as well as against the joint Indo-US naval exercise.
