MUMBAI: A sessions court on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of a doctor from suburban Mumbai, who allegedly aided and abetted a couple in murdering their 23-year-old daughter.

Principal Sessions judge Ashok Bhangale rejected the application of Dr Ramzan Hawaldar as the police needed to investigate the matter further and the offence was of a serious nature.

The doctor was later taken into custody by the police.

According to the police, Kundalik Shevale and step-mother Shakuntala allegedly strangulated and killed their mentally disturbed daughter Kavita on August 14 this year.

While the post-mortem report stated the girl had been throttled to death, Dr Hawaldar gave a death certificate citing natural death only after checking her properly.

However, the post-mortem report also revealed that there were marks on her neck and body hinting that she had been beaten badly. Also, powder was used to cover the marks on the neck.

Kavita was being treated by Dr Hawaldar for the last two years. She was suffering from dehydration and was anemic from August 11. Kundalik had called him for consultation on August 11 and 14 and the latter had advised to shift her to a hospital.

Kundalik had called on Hawaldar for a second time on August 14 to check on Kavita and the girl was already dead when he examined her, according to the defence.

The parents wanted to conduct the funeral at their native place, for which they submitted a copy of the death certificate to the Deonar police station.

On the night of August 15, however, police received information that the girl was murdered and they intercepted the ambulance taking her body to her native place and sent the body for post-mortem.

Prosecution lawyer Ramnath Kini also submitted that the parents have yet to be interrogated in the matter while seeking the bail of the doctor to be rejected.
