Liberhan Commission to submit report before month-end

NEW DELHI: The Liberhan Commission inquiring into the circumstances leading to demolition of Babri Masjid was expected to submit its report before the end of this month after a 15-year tenure that has cost the government Rs 717.66 lakh so far, the Rajya Sabha was informed on Wednesday.

Replying to written queries, Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal replied in negative to a question whether another extension was being granted to Liberhan Commission.

"No Sir, according to the Commission of Inquiry the report is expected to be submitted to the Government within its present tenure (upto August 31, 2007)," Jaiswal said.

He said the Government has spent Rs 717.66 lakh so far on the Commission, headed by retired Justice Manmohan Singh Liberhan.

It has got 40 extensions so far after its appointment within a fortnight of the demolition of the structure at the disputed site on December six, 1992, he said.
