In a move to appease the residents staying in the vicinity of the Deonar and the Mulund dumping grounds, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to make use of deodorant-cum-insect repellants at the grounds. It believes this will help minimize foul smell, create pleasant aroma and repel flies/ insects in the vicinity of the dumping yards. The spray is herbal and oil based.

A proposal to this effect will be tabled before the Standing Committee on Wednesday. More than 9000 metric tonnes of solid waste is disposed off at the two grounds on a daily basis. Biodegradation of the waste leaves a foul smell emanating from the yards making the atmosphere in the surrounds unhygienic and ideal for disease carrying micro organisms to grow.

More than 200 litres per day of the deodorant-cum-insect repellant, to be supplied by one M/s Accurate Hydrualics Pvt Ltd, will be supplied at the two grounds for a period of 180 days. Each litre of the spray will coast Rs130.50 per litre and the purchase will collectively cost the BMC Rs46.98 lakh. Both the dumping grounds are surrounded by residential colonies. BMC has met with protests from them for dumping a majority of city’s solid waste at the two sites.
