3,340 roads constructed under PM's rural road scheme

BHOPAL: As many as 3340 roads have been constructed under the Prime Minister's rural road scheme in Madhya Pradesh, state panchayat and rural development minister Rustam Singh said on Tuesday.

3340 roads, covering a distance of 15,340 km have been constructed with an investment of Rs 3374 crore in the state till last month, Singh said in a release here.

The roads have enabled connectivity between 5598 villages, he said, adding apart from solving problems faced the villagers on a day-to-day basis, the roads have also initiated development process in education, social and economic sectors.

Madhya Pradesh had received maximum sanctions under the scheme from the Centre. It has received Rs 6455 crore between period of December 2000 to March 2007, of which 3374 crore have been spent on road construction, the Minister said.

The money spent by the state government in connecting villages is the highest among the states during the said period, he claimed.
