Manch, a Powai-based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in association with Rodas Ecotel, announced a unique workshop to promote environmental awareness among the youth.

The workshop focuses on crafting artifacts from eco-friendly material. Silt from Powai Lake will be used to make Ganesha idols. Elsie Gabriel of Manch said, “The message we wish to convey through this workshop is the need to give back to nature what we take from it. Synthetic materials used in Ganesha idols have been polluting Powai Lake for years. Collective efforts can help curb this. The idea behind the Environment Awards for students is to encourage conscientious use of resources to ensure long-term survival.”

The workshop will educate participants on how to protect the environment through small yet significant measures—like the use of paper bags instead of plastic ones.

The workshop will be held at Rodas Ecotel, Powai at 10 am on September 1, 2007. At least 150 students from 25 schools in Mumbai will participate in the workshop. The organisers will announce the best eco-friendly artifact and Ganesha idol at the end of the workshop.

In addition to this, a workshop on photography has been organised. Mukesh Trivedi, senior photographer of DNA, will guide students on the mechanics of photography. An exhibition of Trivedi’s photographs will help reinforce environmental awareness among the participants.

Noted environmentalist Sunjoy Monga will address students during the workshop. Celebrities like Mukesh Khanna, go-karting champion Murtuza Bootwalla, singer Hari Haran will also attend the workshop.
