MUMBAI: It is official. Kapil Dev is the persona non-grata of the Indian Cricket Board. A day after he paraded his new bunch of ‘devils’ under the aegis of Indian Cricket League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) expelled the country’s only World Cup winning captain from the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

“He ceases to be chairman of the NCA,” BCCI’s treasurer N Srinivasan announced at a press conference. The decision to remove Kapil was taken at a special general meeting here on Tuesday.

The meeting was called by the board to constitutionally empower itself to take such action. "It is a unanimous decision. Those who are part of the league not recognised by the Board are not welcome," the treasurer said.

NCA's vice-chairman Ajay Shirke will act as the chairman till the BCCI Annual General Meeting here on September 28 when a permanent arrangement will be made.

Consequently, the players who have joined the ICL were also expelled en bloc. "They will not be allowed to take part in any of the Board's activities," a BCCI official said.

Kapil, one of the greatest all-rounders of the game, said he was not surprised by the decision. "There is nothing surprising about the board's action. This is how they have been functioning for the last 70 years," he told a TV channel.

"They have never thought it fit to talk to any player. There is disappointment because I will not be able to interact with the young boys." Kapil replaced Sunil Gavaskar as NCA Chairman last September. Kapil's term was to end this September.

Since the day Kapil embraced the ICL, his head was on the chopping block. Even as the Board sent out messages that it was not pleased with his decision to align himself with the Essel Group-promoted league, the former India captain challenged the board to take action against him.
