NEW DELHI: Ahead of the crucial meeting of the UPA, the Government on Sunday struck an optimistic note of resolving the crisis arising out of the Left's threat over the Indo-US nuclear deal, saying the allies feel that a way out is possible.

"Everyone feels that a way out is possible," External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is the key trouble-shooter for the Government in the matter, told reporters when asked about the feeling of the UPA allies.

Mukherjee has held talks with RJD supremo Lalu Prasad and NCP chief Sharad Pawar and also had discussions over telephone with a number of allies.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have also held consultations over telephone with several allies.

Mukherjee, however, was non-committal on the key demand of the Left that the deal should not be operationalised. "You have to find a way out. What is possible, what is not possible. There are different stands on 'operationalisation'," he said.

Noting that there were several stages like the IAEA and NSG guidelines, he said unless these are done, "how can you say that the deal is through?"

He insisted that "many stages have to be gone through" after signing the text of the agreement.

Mukherjee also did not react on the latest suggestion from the Left for a mechanism to consider their reservations on the Hyde Act and evaluate the implications. He said anything could be said only after the meeting of the Congress Core Group.

Mukherjee, who is External Affairs Minister, emphasised that one cannot have a "deadline in diplomacy", which is a continuous thing.

The Leader of the Lok Sabha sounded philosophical when asked whether he felt that mid-term elections were round the corner.

"If this government goes and there is no alternate government, then only thing will be elections. It is a matter not controlled by an individual. It is a coalition government," he said.

"You have to face it," he said when asked about reports that the BJP was toying with the idea of a no-confidence motion against the government.
