NEW DELHI: IIM students did internship at CPI(M) headquarters here a few months ago and political leaders such as Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and CPI(M) politburo member Sitaram Yechury were invited to lecture them.

Now, it is the turn of Parliament and MPs. Ten university students from across the country will soon have a taste of parliamentary business.

They will assist MPs in preparing questions, speeches and gathering inputs for their parliamentary activities.

For the first time, these grads are being absorbed asinternees with some select MPs for the monsoon session. Post-graduate students may also be considered.

Parliament Research, Studies and Legislative (PRS) wing, an autonomous institution that studies parliamentary policy issues, has roped them in for 10 weeks.

“It is a pilot project meant to give young students an opportunity to get a deeper understanding of politics and policy-making in the country,” MR Madhavan, senior research fellow at PRS, told reporters.

The students will spend four to five hours daily in assisting the MPs, he said.

The assignments will range from providing research support to MPs to assisting them in fulfilling their legislative and other parliamentary responsibilities. “The idea is to sensitise young students and get them engaged with the legislative process,” Madhavan added.

The internship programme will begin with a two-week orientation and training session. PRS will also work with interns prior to and during the internship to train and orient them to the different aspects of parliamentary business.

The internees will be paid a token stipend of Rs 5,000 by the PRS. The programme may be expanded later to accommodate more students once the PRS gets a detailed feedback from the MPs and the internees on their on experiences.
