MUMBAI: Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) has chalked out a new role for Jaspal Bindra, who has just got a leg-up in the organisation. Bindra, who was serving as the regional CEO for South East and South Asia, will now don the role of director of SCB. He will be based in Singapore in his current position as regional chief executive, South East and South Asia with governance responsibility for the region.

This 46-year-old has worked with Bank of America and UBS prior to joining Standard Chartered Bank. “I began my career with Bank of America in 1984 and worked with them across treasury, capital markets and consumer banking in India and Singapore.” Bindra joined SCB in 1998 after four years with UBS Investment Banking. Later, he moved to Singapore in 2003. Prior to the shift, he was the CEO for India where he successfully led the acquisition of ANZ Grindlays.

When asked about his experience of acquiring ANZ Grindlays, he said: “This was not an easy task. I think this has been my best experience with SCB, till date. There was so much of learning involved during this. I feel this is my greatest achievement.” “Although it gives a feeling of being one of the great bankers across the world, my responsibilities have increased towards the public and the regulator. Social responsibility is the key. I am now accountable to a lot of people at different levels,” Bindra said.

Not to forget, Bindra is the second highest ranking Indian in a foreign bank after Deutsche’s Anshu Jain. “I am feeling really good on that front. There are so many Indians entering this space. Indians are blessed with the right skills and attitude which is required fro running the bank. We’ll see more and more Indians filling the space in the coming years,” he concluded.
