Lawyers from the Bhiwandi court bar association went on strike for five days from Monday affecting the court work. Lawyers have been demanding an additional district court and a sessions court for Bhiwandi since past several years.

“The population of Bhiwandi is more than 10 lakh and the court’s building is more than 100-years-old. It is also very small. Even the number of civil and criminal cases have increased and proceedings in many cases are pending since a long time. There are no chambers for judges and lawyers to sit and court rooms are very less,” said Advocate Keshari Maurya, President, Bhiwandi Court Bar Association.

Many people who had their hearings in the Bhiwandi court today had to get lawyers from Thane and Kalyan.

Maurya said, “Our association had proposed to the state government in 1988 for the additional district court and sessions court but till date there has been no development.
The Bombay High Court has approved the proposal of setting up an additional district and sessions court at Bhiwandi"

"All the civil suits that have a claim of over Rs1 lakh have to be filed at the Thane District Court and the people from Bhiwandi and rural areas like Wada and Jawhar have to go all the way to Thane. It is both time consuming and expensive. We had also sent this proposal to the chief minister in January 2005 and to the Thane district judge in 2006 asking him to look into the matter and consider the large number of pending cases.”

Advocate Devanand Pandit said, “We want the state government to provide funds for the new court building as soon as possible so that an additional district court and sessions court could be established in Bhiwandi reducing the trouble of people coming in the court for their hearings. There is no proper place to sit for the lawyers and judges here.”

“If an additional district and sessions court is set in Bhiwandi it will be helpful for those who have been waiting for their cases to come up in the court hearings since a long time. It will also reduce the trouble of going all the way to Thane court for civil matters,” said Mohammad Ansari, a resident of Padma Nagar in Bhiwandi.
