SRINAGAR: Changing trends and tastes of tourists have prompted the J&K government to promote the breathtaking beauty of its countryside in a bid to boost rural tourism in the state.

Around 50 tourist villages are to be set up in different parts of the state for development of rural tourism. Twenty six villages will be set up in the Kashmir valley, four in Ladakh and 20 others in the Jammu region.

“The makeover of the tourism sector is aimed at introducing community tourism in the state. The main purpose of this scheme is to reach the benefits to the lowest section of the society,” said Sarmad Hafiz, joint director, tourism department, Kashmir.

The centre has sanctioned Rs 35 crore for the project and initially, five tourist villages will be established in the state. In 2006-2007 three more villages Akingaam, Wasakhnag, Dori Degair, were sanctioned to be developed at the cost of Rs 1.49 crore.

“The concept of tourism is changing globally. A vast majority of tourists want to have a first hand experience of village life. They want to know about local culture. We want to tap this section of the tourists which will give a huge benefit to the local people,” said Sarmad.

Community tourism is already a big success in the north-eastern states, where people have improved infrastructure in villages to attract tourists worldwide.

“Community tourism is a big hit in north east states,” said Sarmad, adding, “We want to make Kashmir a favourite tourist destination.”

The J&K government is now focusing on developing infrastructure in these villages. From improving accommodation facilities to setting up community centers, the villages will be developed on modern lines without altering its natural ambience.
